Terry Sanford, born James Terry Sanford, August 20, 1917, in Laurinburg, N. C. He was the second son of Cecil L. and Elizabeth Martin Sanford. He received the A.B. degree in 1939 and the J.D. degree in 1946 from the University of North Carolina. He served as an FBI agent, 1941-1942, with the United States Army in Europe during World War II, and as assistant director of the Institute of Government, UNC-Chapel Hill, 1946-1948. Greensboro Mayor David Schenck was born 7 January 1927 in Greensboro, N.C., and was the great-grandson of Judge David Schenck, a prominent 19th century lawyer and politician in Greensboro. Schenck received a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University in 1947 and attended the business school at the University of North Carolina in 1948.
